Geographical Profiling for poker player tendencies
Poker, Poker News, Texas Holdem Poker January 3rd, 2010I recently went back to playing tournaments and cash games at Full Tilt Poker. Since I started again, I see a strong international presence at the tables. After about 10k hands, I started to see identical betting patterns by players from the same country. I hate to generalize, but I think there is merit to what I’m seeing. I thought I was imagining things, but then knew was on to something when I saw threads on Two Plus Two discussing French players and such. Then I talked to my friend who plays allot of heads up at Full Tilt and he stated the same about Russian poker players. I’m not saying if your French you suck, I’m just saying they have more bad players per capita. The USA has some of the worst players, however they have a ton of amazing players. The USA has the most online poker players by far, and when you have that many players your going to have players dominating the top of the leaderboards, and your going to have a big fish pond.

Russia – Russians have the most aggressive betting patterns. They tend to check raise, semi-bluff, and call off allot of chips. This country seems like it’s players will dominate one day. The people are very strategy + training oriented. The cold winters keep people indoors playing chess and other games like poker. I think players from Russia and Sweden will emerge to be the biggest rivals to the United States.
USA- the United States is all across the board since it is made up of many different nationalities. There is allot of Americans who will push all in pre flop if you raise them allot. They can be very stubborn like the German players who I will describe below. This country is also very training oriented and will always have a group of the best players in the world and will most likely dominate poker for a while.
Canada – Canadians can be very poor players. I don’t know if it’s just French Canadians who play this bad or what. They seem to make moves at the wrong time and call off allot of chips with air. More and more I’m playing weak players and move the mouse over their avatar and it says Canada. Daniel Negreanu seems to be and exception to this rule. And keep in mind, I’m not saying every Canadian sucks, just a large % of the bad players I play. Canadians seem to be suited to play MTTs.
France – The French take the cake for the worst poker players hands down. Over and over again I see a bad move, move my mouse over them, and bam! France!
I think all the genetic make-up that is used for poker went right into ELKY and David Benyamine. I’ll take bets on French as the worst country for putting out poker players per capita.
Greece – Greeks play like Russians. Very aggressive and can be too aggressive at times. There is not a huge internet presence from Greece. They can be a cross between Russian poker players and Denmark players in style. LAG style that calls too much pre flop.
Brazil – Brazilian players can be calling stations. Not allot of info on them yet. I haven’t seen any real good players coming out of here. I did see a Brazilian player win a mini FTOPS but that was about it, and he luck boxed the win. The Brazilian cash players that I’ve run into have been really weak.
Spain – Spanish players can be tricky on occasion. Tend to call allot like Brazil. You can see the tricky aggressive style in Carlos Mortensen, who is one of the best poker players of all time.
Germany – Germans are the most stubborn of all the countries. Germans hate when you try to steal their blinds and will call way too much. They will also reraise all in preflop with a whole range of starting hands when they feel like you are trying to buy a pot. That’s when you are constantly putting pressure on them. Typically Germans will raise or smooth call pre, then continuation bet the flop and turn. I like to reraise Germans on the flop and turn, try it a few times and see how it goes. Germans continuation bet rather then check raise like the Russians.
Denmark – The poker players from Denmark are similar to Germans. They can be stubborn at times like the Germans, but are more likely to call you down rather than re raise you. Gus Hansen shows allot of this calling station style in his LAG play. He really has trouble folding hands, and this causes allot of variance. I know this, because I suffer from it myself.
Czech – In my experience in playing the Czechoslovakian players, they seem to be some of the worst. I just looked at the poker tournaments that took place in Prague, and I only saw one player who was from Czechoslovakia finish in the money.
Ukraine – Ukrainian poker players are not as sophisticated as the Russian players, but have a similar style. They just seem to be more aggressive at all the wrong times.
Sweden - Aggressive play from this country. Usually sophisticated and allot of times they will play a LAG style. Will play AK into the ground in Texas Holdem. They will not be folding any good starting hand like or overcards post flop anytime soon. They might even call you down with a middle pocket pair with a scary board showing (this is a German tendency also). If you look at the WSOP tournament results, you will see an amount of Swedish flags that is disproportionate to their population. And in the last few months, poker saw the emergence of a young Swede named Victor Blom who plays under the name Isildur1 at Full Tilt Poker. Patrik Antonius stated that he was a very dangerous and advanced players. Victor Blom not only player the best players in the world, but played then at the same time! I’m looking forward to see allot more internet poker pros come out of here.

UK – UK has it’s share of bad players like the USA does because of the shear number of online players that come out of these countries. However, the UK seems to be putting out some really good players. The UK has good sit and go players and good MTT players.
Australia – Auzzies are close to the French in their bad players per capita. They have allot of dead money. Some Auzzies rise past this and do very well. Their distance from the rest of the world gives them limited play against other countries except when online, this gives them less live experience.
Vietnam - Vietnam has such a strong presence on the poker circuit. Just look at the top of any major tournament in the world and look to see how many Nguyens you can spot. Vietnamese players seem to excel at tournament poker. Could this trend be just from Men the Master counterfeiting chips and his cohorts soft playing him?
One thing is for sure, there is a large number of top tournament players who are Vietnamese.

Middle East – I’m putting all the Middle East together as one country. Isreali players and players from countries like Lebanon are very good players. They start off loose aggressive in their career and generally tighten up over the years and become tight aggressive. Eli Elezra didn’t ever tighten up his play, he plays loose and aggressive. Players from this region can be very tricky and advanced. Players from the middle east are inherently mathematical players and understand earned value or EV from early in their careers.
Ireland – They say the luck of the Irish huh? Unfortunately I do not have enough data on Irish players to say they have a particular poker style.
Switzerland – Again, not enough info gathered on this country. I don’t see allot of Swiss flags at the top of databases.
Finland – Poker players from Finland tend to be very aggressive. They constantly put their opponents to make big decisions. Patrik Antonius is the epitome of Finnish poker players. Ilari Sahamies and Patrik Antonius started playing together in Finland.
Norway – Norway spawned one of the biggest anomalies that poker has ever seen in a player called Annette Obrestad. Annette Obrestad has just turned 21 and has been dominating online poker for years. I’ll be looking for more poker “crews” to emerge from from here in the future.
Italy – The Italian online poker population is growing. Italy has some very talented poker players. Italians are not afraid to gamble. At lower states this is a different story, in lower stakes I see weak passive plays by Italians as a whole. In high stakes poker, the Italians that make it there are very aggressive. Italy boasts top playrs like Jeff Lisandro and Dario Minieri. Jeff proved that Italy has one of the best poker players in existence.
Netherlands – The players that I have seen from the Netherlands tend to play allot of flops. They can sometimes even have a maniac playing style at the tables. Marcel Luske is the most famous players from the Netherlands. When playing on Rush Poker, I ran into allot of players from the Netherlands, they are semi-tight agg pre, position players, who will be very aggressive post flop. Formidable opponents!
Scotland – Not a big poker scene in Scotland. Not enough info.
Venezuela – The only poker poker player that I remember playing in cash games was Jorge Arias when I used to play at Pokerstars. Jorge Arias played under the screen name Twin Caracas and has recently been signed by them. Although, I think he has switched screen names if I’m not mistaken. I watched him rise from 10 cent 25 cent NL to 5/10 NL where I ran into him again. Then I went broke and he went on to 25/50 NL and beyond. Not enough info on Venezuelan players to make any comments about their style.
Costa Rica – Costa Rica is where most of the online poker sites are located for legal reasons. I don’t see allot of Costa Rican poker players when playing online. The only Costa Ricans I know of who are getting big results are the Brenes brothers.
In conclusion I’d say that the United States has the largest number of poker pros. Sweden has the best poker players / capita. Russia has the most aggressive players and are very strategy oriented and most likely to make moves. The Finnish players are to be feared. The French will have to get stem cell research done on them using Elky’s DNA. I hope you enjoyed the pics in this post whether you agree with me or not. Below is a poll on what country has the best players PER CAPITA. Please add your input to the survey!
