Event #14 was the $1,500 NL 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball event. 250 players started in the event and 29 made the money. JC Tran and Erik Seidel were among those that cashed but fell short of the final table. Nick Binger started the final table as chip leader, but by the end, heads-up was between Mike Wattel and Yan Chen. Chen would emerge victorious to take home the bracelet and $92,817
Event #15 was the $10,000 Stud 8 or Better World Championship. This final table was among the strongest of this WSOP. Vladimir Schmelev made his third final table of the WSOP and was joined by John Juanda, Steve Zolotow, Jennifer Harman, and Allen Kessler. However, it was Frank Kassela that would run hot at the right time and would ultimately wind up heads-up with Allen Kessler. Kessler could never overcome Kassela’s chip lead and Frank Kassela took home his first WSOP bracelet and $447,416.
Event #16 was the $1,500 NL Holdem Six-Handed Event. Carter Phillips entered the final table with almost 2 Million more chips than the rest of the field. In the end, he had a wire-to-wire final table run that resulted in his first bracelet and $482,774 in prize money.
Event #17, the $5,000 NL Holdem was among the strongest fields in the entire WSOP. The final table boasted two pros looking for their first bracelet in both Jason DeWitt and David Benefield. DeWitt made it heads up with Sam Trickett and after a combination of patient play and a little luck, Jason Dewitt walked away with his first bracelet and $818,959 in prize money.
Event #18, $2,000 Limit Holdem, boiled down to a final table that included Matt Grapenthien, Matt Matros, and 2009 November Nine member Eric Buchman. Matros had won the $1,500 Limit Event and was looking for his second bracelet. Heads-up play was between Eric Buchman and Brent Courson with Buchman holding a huge lead. In the end, the lead was too much for Courson to handle and Eric Buchman took down his first WSOP bracelet and $203,607 for top prize money.
David Baker won his first bracelet for taking down Event #19, the $10,000 2-7 Lowball Championship. He survived a final table that included John Juanda, Erik Seidel, and George Danza. He won $294,314 to go with his first bracelet.
The WSOP Player of the Year race is currently heading up as well. The four players that are in contention for the honor so far are John Juanda, Michael Mizrachi, Vladimir Schmelev, and David Baker. Juanda at present is in the lead off of the strength of his three final table finishes. He has final tables so far this year in the $50,000 Player’s Championship, the $10,000 Stud 8 or Better World Championship, and the $10,000 2-7 Lowball Championships. Schmelev is next with three final tables, and all in World Championship Events. He was runner-up to Michael Mizrachi in the $50,000 Player’s Championship. Mizrachi and Baker have two final table appearances each as well as one bracelet win each.
