Recap of Day 4 2009 WSOP plus chip counts

Posted by Poker Videos on July 11th, 2009

Day 4 of the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event started with 789 players returning to try and make their way to the money in this event. Bertrand Grospellier started the day as chip leader with 1.3 Million in chips but many big poker names remained including Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Joe Hachem, Andy Black, Joe Sebok, and Alex Kostritsyn.

Early in the day, Jack Effel announced that play would continue until either 400 players were eliminated or four levels played, whichever occurred first. As the bubble approached, various players took their own approach to making the money. Some sat on their stacks, hoping for others to bust out while other players aggressively attacked the blinds and antes of players looking to coast into the cash.

Hevad Khan and Greg Mueller busted just shy of the money. Mueller ran pocket sixes into pocket aces and could not catch a set. Khan ran A-K into pocket aces. Bertrand Grospellier was at a table with five players sitting under 250,000 and was raising literally every hand. He moved up to 1.6 Million as the bubble approached.

Hand for hand play lasted for nearly two hours as various players survived big all-in confrontations or made huge laydowns to stay alive. Lou Diamond Phillips moved up to 565,000 chips during this time after turning a straight against J.C. Tran. Brian Hodhod made the laydown of the bubble period. After facing a three-bet all-in from Michael Shvartsman, Hodhod tanked for several minutes to contemplate his action. With literally the poker world watching, he folded pocket kings face up. Shvartsman revealed that he indeed had Hodhod drawing to two outs as he showed pocket aces.

Kia Hamadani had been blinded down to his final 500 chip, and he was all-in for the ante. Reed Hensel raised to 17,000 and received two callers. On a flop of Q-6-Q, Hensel bet out and the two live players folded. Hensel showed a 9-2 to the dismay of those watching. Amazingly, he was in the lead as Hamadani held only 4-3. Running nines on the turn and river sealed the hand for Hensel and Kia Hamadani is the bubble boy for the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event. He did not leave empty handed. As the bubble boy, Jack Link’s Beef Jerky has purchased his 2010 Main Event seat for him.

As expected, after the bubble burst, bustouts were fast and furious with the short stacks making their stands. Chris Ferguson was one of the early eliminations. After getting his stack crippled, he was all-in for the ante with 9-2. Sander Lylloff raised pre-flop to isolate Ferguson with Ac-6h. The flop fell J-6-6 to allow Lylloff to send “Jesus” to the rail with 6-6-6. Phil Ivey moved up to nearly a million in chips after eliminating Bingjian Wu. On a queen high board, Ivey moved all-in, having Wu covered. Wu tanked a while before finally calling. Ivey showed pocket aces and moved up to 900,000 in chips.

The biggest elimination of the day was 11-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth. On a flop of Jc-10d-5c, Kevin Jenkins moved all-in for 83,000, Hellmuth raised all-in for 110,000, and Kenny Hsiung called. Hellmuth held pocket aces, Jenkins held 9h-8h, and Hsiung held Jh-10h for two pair. The turn was the 7d, to eliminate Hellmuth from the main pot, and the river fell the 3s to eliminate him from the event.

Four levels were completed with 407 players left in the Main Event. Ludovic Lacay is the current chip leader with 1.608 Million. Tom Lutz is right behind him with 1.6 Million and Jordan Morgan has 1.489 Million. Phil Ivey is in 11th with 1.25 Million and in great shape to make a run at the final table.

Unfortunately for Ivey, he is no longer in contention for the Player of the Year race. Jeff Lisandro has officially wrapped up that honor, finishing with 355 points to best the 320 of Ville Wahlbeck. Ivey only had 242 points going into the Main and even if he won, he could only tally 342 points. While the WSOP strives for fairness, the Main Event should be worth more points than a normal event. 150 to 200 points would be a fair point tally for the Main Event.

Play will resume at 12 p.m. PDT on Sunday. Many strong players remain in the field including Bertrand Grospellier, Phil Ivey, Jordan Morgan, Theo Tran, Dan Harrington, Hac Dang, Dennis Phillips, Andy Black, Mickey Mills, Noah Boeken, and David Benyamine. Lou Diamond Phillips is also still in strong contention with a stack of 755,000.

407 players remain with four days left before the November 9 is set. Will Ivey or another top pro make the final table? Can Lou Diamond Phillips continue his Cinderella run and write his own poker story? Will Norman Chad come up with new material for his WSOP broadcasts? Stay tuned to find out the answers to these questions and the conclusion to the Main Event of the 2009 World Series of Poker.

January online High Stakes Poker

Posted by Poker Videos on February 9th, 2009

Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Gus Hansen. For the month of January, nobody had a better month online than Gus Hansen. In a month that the online poker world was watching Tom Dwan aka durrrr, Hansen amassed over $2.9 Million in winnings on Full Tilt Poker at the Pot Limit Omaha tables. He did give about $100,000 back at the H.O.R.S.E. tables, but for the month, Hansen finished up an impressive $2.9 Million.

Tom Dwan aka durrrr had a good month at the NL Holdem tables on Full Tilt Poker, but PLO was a different beast altogether for the Million Dollar Man. While winning $1.083 Million in NL Holdem, Dwan proceeded to drop over $1.8 Million in PLO. He made $28,000 of it back at the H.O.R.S.E. tables, but that still leaves him over $800,000 in the red for the month. So far, 2009 has not been a good start Dwan. Hopefully he won’t end up devastating his bankroll trying to take on all challengers.

Phil Ivey finished up over $400,000 in NL Holdem for the month and over $370,000 in PLO. Ivey did have a down month at the H.O.R.S.E. tables, but it only hit him for about $40,000. In the end, Ivey was his usual picture of consistency, winning over $700,000 for the month.

Hac Dang aka trex313 and OnTheRize were the only other players to make over $500,000 for the month. Dang won just over a Million in PLO for the month, but dropped $163,000 back at the NL tables to finish up around $850,000 for the month. OnTheRize finished up over $670,000 at the PLO tables.

Phil Galfond OMGClayAiken joined Tom Dwan in dropping over $800,000 for the month of January. Over $783,000 of his loss came in PLO. The 2008 WSOP $10,000 PLO bracelet winner is already stuck more in one month than he won for his bracelet victory.

LarsLuzak ended up being the biggest loser for the month of January, and unfortunately for him, being the biggest loser in poker doesn’t land you in an NBC reality show. LarsLuzak dropped over $1.4 Million for the month of January. He did not have a winning month in any game on FTP. He dropped $1.283 Million in NL Holdem, $79,977 in PLO, and $40,255 in Omaha 8 or Better.

With Gus Hanson up nearly $3 Million already this year, it will be interesting how the year turns out for the Great Dane. Will he be able to keep up the impressive run, or will he come back to earth? Odds are that Phil Ivey will be in a long line of players looking to relieve him of his money.

Also, how will the Tom Dwan saga unfold? Will he continue to lose, or will the superior skill that allowed him to make his Million Dollar Challenge take over? It should be an exciting year of high stakes action, and as always, we will be right here breaking it down for you.

High Stakes Hac Dang Trex313 Brian Hastings Pot Limit omaha

Posted by Poker Videos on March 10th, 2008

A high stakes poker game on Full Tilt poker has recently consisted of one or two tables of $200/$400 Pot Limit Omaha. Things changed a big on Monday, as the game and limits stayed the same, but the number of tables that had action changed quite significantly. Not one or two tables went off, but seven different tables of the game were being played at the same time. High stakes regulars such as Brian Hastings (previous known as Stinger885 on PokerStars and LucLongley on Full Tilt and recent addition to Full Tilt Poker’s ‘red list’), Hac ‘trex313′ Dang, Phil Gandolph aka OMGClayAiken, and David Benyamine were just a few of the many that participated in the marathon games that took place Monday. Nearly every pot topped five digits and rebuys were constant. Several players sat with six figures in his stack and a few times on multiple tables. With the best in the world, there was also, of course, a lot of gambling that took place in the game. We have seen some cold streaks in our time, but rarely do we see a big hot streak like we did Monday night. While all of these players were scattered across four or five short handed tables, two heads up tables took place between Brian Hastings and Ziigmund.

Here are the biggest and most interesting hands of this session.

Hand number one takes place between Brian Hastings and Ilari ‘Ziigmund‘ Sahamies. All the money got in on the river, and Hastings took the pot with a queen high flush.

The next hand was a three way pot between two unknown players okyouwin and IcallSoWhat as well as one of the newest groups of Full Tilt Pros, Brian Hastings. All three players got the money in before the flop, and Brian Hastings 3-4-5-6 was enough to trump okyouwin’s pocket queens with a straight on the river.

The game continued its insane aggressive nature for hours. Players raisisng and reraising and min buying and shoving hoping to double made it a very fun game to watch. Here, we see Brian Hastings continue his mega hot streak on the evening when he takes a $34,000 hand off of Hac Dang.

Back again to the heads up game between Hastings and Sahamies. Hastings took a big lead in both games, up about $60-$70k on each table. Every hot streak must come to an end. Except for this one. Here, Hastings wins yet another big hand.

It truly was the Brian Hastings show tonight. As we closed up shop for the day, these were the winners and losers of the session. Icallsowhat and CHUFTY as well as Hac Dang were losers on the day, but nothing much bigger than $40,000 each. The big winner of the day was newly crowned Full Tilt Pro Brian Hastings. Hastings, once up $220,000, ended the session up about $140,000 on the night. Phil Gandoplh was also a small winner on the night, somewhere in the range of $60,000.

High Stakes Pot Limit Omaha Trex313, Pr1nnyraid, Icre84U and more

Posted by Poker Videos on March 7th, 2008

Wednesday produced a big high stakes Pot Limit Omaha game taking place on Full Tilt Poker. The regular players such as ‘Icre84U’ ‘trex313′ ‘pr1nnyraid’ and ‘LucLongley‘ joined the action throughout the session. The game played fairly tight for the most part, however, we were able to catch a couple of big, interesting hands. Our first big hand took place between players ‘trex313′ and ‘Icre84U.’ All the money got in on the flop, and trex313 showed a nine high flush draw with a gutshot straight draw. Much to his chagrin, player ‘Icre84U’ showed two aces, with an ace high flush draw, leaving ‘trex313′ dead to a queen. The queen didn’t come, giving ‘Icre84U’ a pot worth $42,000.

We saw all the money get it on the flop again in this hand. High Stakes Poker regular ‘LucLongley’ got the money in with ‘Icre84U’ with a flopped flush against a flopped set and open ended straight draw. The board didn’t help ‘Icre84U,’ so LucLongley took down this pot worth $35,000.

The two were not done there, however. Both up on the session, the aggressiveness did not subside. The two saw another flop together, and again got all the money in. LucLongley had to give ‘Icre84U’ the pleasure of a double up in this hand, where it was top pair vs. top two pair. This helped ‘Icre84U’ to get unstuck in the game.

LucLongley had been the winner at Table Eginton, sitting with over $50,000 on only a $32,000 investment. He sat this hand out, however, and let KRP3_DM and high stakes player Phil ‘OMGCLAYAIKEN’ Gandolph got all the money in on a flop of Q-6-5. Gandolph had two kings for an overpair, but was crushed when ‘Krp3_DM’ showed two queens for top set as well as an ace high flush draw. ‘Krp3_DM’ won the hand and the $22,000 prize that came along, costing Gandolph half his stack.

At the same time of these two tables, one $200/400 game went on, except this one was heads up. The game took place between players Icre84U and pr1nnyraid. We joined the action and pr1nnyraid held a lead of $54,000 to Icre84U’s $40,000. However, Icre84U would fight his way back and take a small chip lead and grind pr1nnyraid down. In the following hand, we saw Icre84U bust pr1nnyraid.
