Alec Torelli is one of the up and coming stars in the world of poker. For years, he has been grinding it out online and in tournaments overseas. Torelli made big news in 2007 when he won the FTOPS III Main Event. He outlasted a field of over 3,000 players to win the title and $288,001. Up until this point, his best finish was a win in a preliminary event of the 2007 Melbourne Holdem Championships in Austrailia.

Last year, he finally turned 21 and in a short amount of time has established himself as one of the strongest all-around No-Limit Holdem players on the planet. Torelli took center stage at the 2008 World Series of Poker when he made it to the finals of the $10,000 NL Holdem Heads-Up World Championship. He would ultimately finish 2nd to pro Kenny Tran and would receive $336,896. He would cash in another WSOP event later in the series, but one of his biggest accomplishments was yet to occur.

The Festa Al Lago WPT is one of the larger events in the fall in Vegas. Many pros come out to the Bellagio to not only compete for the cash and titles, but also to perhaps take a crack at Bobby’s Room. Torelli would go on an incredible run during the preliminaries during the events. First, he took down the $3,000 NL Holdem event against Jonathan Little to win $84,100. Just two days later, he made the final table of the $5,000 NL Holdem event. The table included Dustin Woolf, Michael Binger, Amnon Filippi, James Mackey, Toto Leonidas, Scott Clements, and Jonathan Little. Both Little and Torelli would face off again heads-up for the title and the outcome was a repeat performance for Torelli. He took home $120,715 and quickly established himself as one of the hottest young players on the circuit.

Torelli kicked off 2009 in much the same fashion as he finished off 2008. At Aussie Millions, he made the finals of the $5,000 AU buy-in Australian Heads-Up Championship. He would finish runner-up in the event for $42,622. In just seven months time, Torelli had made the finals of two of the largest heads-up tournaments on the planet. While he didn’t win either event, he has definitely put the poker world on notice that he is a formidable force in heads-up poker.

Unfortunately, Torelli was not selected as part of the NBC National Heads-Up Championship earlier in March. Controversy was sparked amongst many fans as to why players such as Don Cheadle and Brad Garrett received invites over someone who has a proven track record in heads-up play. Obviously, a lot of the selection has to do with ratings, but at the same time, the best heads-up players should be at a “National” event.

Whether online or live at the felt, Alec Torelli is a strong force in the NL Holdem world. His ability to play all facets of the game has earned him Millions and has put him in line to potentially become one of tomorrow’s superstars.
