Before becoming a poker professional this young man drove the London train system. Now he conducts his way through the crowds of poker enthusiasts, achieving new heights with every aspiration. Recently James Akenhead achieved a targeted goal of more than 6500 individuals.
He has been playing poker since he was 20 years old. Starting out just an occasional home game, he turned pro two years later. Since then he has joined some friends as a member of ‘the hit squad’ a group of poker players who enter local and international poker events. James Ackenhead has found many successes at the tables since. Since turning to professional poker, he has become well known in several European circuits and has won more than 600 thousand in cashes for live events alone.
Although he prefers to play Texas Hold’em he has been known to be competitive in Pot Limit Omaha as well. He participated in the Governor UK Poker Tour in May of 2008, cashing for more than 520 thousand US dollars
The World Series of Poker 2008 was a banner moment for him, winning his first tournament event, and a cash of 520,219 US dollars, finishing second in event number 5. For 2009 he entered and topped that by making it to the final table of the 10k dollar NL Hold’m Main Event. He is part of the 2009 WSOP November Nine. This guarantees him a million dollar cash, the largest of his career. Along the way to the final table this year, he has had the opportunity to play against each of the other competitors except only one. This means he’s had the opportunity to encounter each style of play, helping him prepare for the final table that will begin again on Nov. 7th, 2009 in the Rio, in Las Vegas. When play resumes he will be the short stack with a mere 6.8 million in chips, but don’t count him out. In interviews he has mentioned that he will be endeavoring to stay out of the spotlight until he sits down at the final table.
