World Series of Poker champion of the 2008 $1,000 Ladies’ No-Limit Hold’em event, Svetlana Gromenkova, was born and raised near Moscow, Russia. Her education endeavors brought her to the United States in 2002. This is when she took up residence in Brooklyn, New York and studied Psychology at New York University. While living in Russia, Gromenkova played bridge professionally. After moving to the U.S., her card interests changed from bridge to poker and she began playing poker online. She made the decision to transition to live tournament play after having much success online.

By 2005, she made her way to poker professional. Since going pro, her tournament performance has improved consistently. She made her first WSOP appearance in 2005, cashing in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em event. As time went on, she continued to post solid tourney results and returned to the WSOP in 2007, cashing in two events for more than $10K. At this point, Svetlana had already created a name for herself in the poker world but it wasn’t until her 2008 WSOP win that she gained considerable popularity.

When you review Svetlana’s tournament resume, you’ll see a whole lot of top ten finishes along with the occasional events where she’s placed much further down the scale. Typically, though, she is a consistent threat at the final table whenever she steps on the gaming floor. Her win at the 2008 WSOP’s Ladies No Limit Hold’em event did not come easily. She was one of 1,190 competitors in the event and worked her way to the top to claim more than $224K and her first WSOP bracelet. She had to fight for this win and did so in face of adversity. When Svetlana was heads up against Anh Le, she suffered a couple of bad beats and Le doubled up right through her. Most other players would drop into a funk that would leave them being the runner-up. In Svetlana’s case, she kept her composure, regrouped, rebuilt her lead and defeated her opponent. This type of play has defined her game and kept her successful. As of 2009, her total winnings are in excess of $400K.

When she’s not playing poker, she likes to travel, study foreign languages, watch movies and play backgammon.
